Washington Post says The Perfect Workout's "Slow-motion strength training is hard — and fast."

We'd like to thank the Washington Post for choosing us to be featured in an amazing article about Slow Motion Strength Training and the results associated with this scientifically proven method.

According to the article, the Slow-motion strength training studios feel less like a gym and more like a physical therapist’s office. These training studios offer clients more of a personal training in a quiet, no-frills space filled with Nautilus equipment. It's a complete workout in just two short sessions per week.

The article features the high-intensity, low-impact program known as "slow-motion strength training". It means that gradually lifting and releasing weights without the aid of rest or momentum brings muscles to exhaustion (muscle success). It is extremely difficult but it’s also only a total of 20 minutes per session.

Though The Perfect Workout, a California-based outfit founded in 1999, is new to the East Coast, the Slow-motion strength training concept isn’t. The Perfect Workout system cites principles outlined just over 30 years ago by fitness professional Ken Hutchins. In slowing down movements to safely train women with osteoporosis, Hutchins concluded that the technique builds muscle more effectively than conventional weight training.

However, the effectiveness of slow-motion strength training depends on the individual, according to Lee Jordan, a spokesman for the American Council on Exercise. But, it offers a broad range of people a safe and viable program. Like high-intensity interval training, Jordan says, it seeks to remove the top barrier to exercise, which is time. Unlike high-intensity interval training (“by its very nature, it’s extreme,” Jordan says), slow-motion strength training is accessible to anyone.

It also talks about the benefits and the good practices of slow-motion strength training. According to the article, practitioners of slow-motion strength training also satisfy their need for cardiovascular activity. The key to an exercise routine is sticking to that routine. And The Perfect Workout's clients say this program works. Clients love to hate slow-motion strength training but they keep coming back because they get results. Slow-motion strength training practitioners also often report better body composition plus lower blood sugar and cholesterol.

Although slow-motion strength training may not be sexiest or trendiest, it gets the job done quicker and safer. Moreover, many clients of an advanced age love the safety along with the added bone strength that slow-motion strength training offers. Lastly, slow-motion training sessions come in several convenient packages. Some packages even help reduce osteoporosis and Type 2 Diabetes.

Without changing her diet, Leslie lost 10 pounds and two sizes with one simple solution: Slow-motion strength training

Since she began slow-motion strength training, microbiologist Leslie Martin has seen a decrease in her LDL (bad) cholesterol from 210 down to 140, and while she used to be a size 10, her firmer, more muscular body is now a size 6!

If you don’t do anything to actively stay in good shape, life has a way of creeping up on you. Leslie Martin wasn’t overweight, but even though she had worked out in the past, she started noticing her muscles getting weaker. She could also see a little layer of fat under the skin, “dimpling” as she calls it, on the front of her legs and her abdomen. The problem was that she doesn’t really like gyms. “The loud music, waiting for equipment, people waiting for you to get off a machine, it’s just not pleasant,” she says. “I had some success with cardio, and I had tried Pilates in the past, but I wanted to work out with weights.” The Perfect Workout’s ad online caught her attention with the promise of a good overall strength workout in just 20 minutes. In the past she often worked out for an hour or more, so being able to sneak a workout in on the way to work appealed to her.

That was in October of 2012, and after only a few workouts, Leslie felt better and had more energy. The strength training effects took a little longer to kick in. It wasn’t until about four months later when a friend asked her what she was doing that she realized her body had changed. The dimpling was gone, her skin was smooth and toned, and her arms, which were kind of skinny with slack skin before, now had a rounded, toned look. “She didn’t believe what I was doing, because she was working out five times a week,” says Leslie. “As you start doing The Perfect Workout, it’s like turning back the clock. I was toning before, but now I’m building muscle.” While she admits she didn’t have too far to go, Leslie looks and feels younger than her 56 years. She’s lost ten pounds and dropped from a size 10 to a six. “I don’t remember the last time I bought a size six! When I was a teenager probably.” A nice side effect, too, has been a decrease in her LDL (bad) cholesterol from 210 down to 140.

Before she came to The Perfect Workout, Leslie says she didn’t know what she was doing working out on her own. “It’s so much easier with a personal trainer. They take care of all the little details, keeping track of adjustments and the amount of weight. Plus, they push you to go longer on each exercise than you could go otherwise. Those last 20 seconds make a difference in your results.” Keith has been Leslie’s trainer all along at the Rancho Bernardo studio, and she loves his positive, upbeat style. He’s helped her go from 120 to 200 pounds on the leg press (one of the best overall exercises you can do), and her goal this year is to get up to 300 pounds.

Besides looking and feeling younger, the slow-motion strength training is paying off in everyday activities, too. At her job as a microbiologist for Scripps, the big commercial refrigerator doors used to be so heavy that Leslie would have to throw her body weight into it. Now, with muscles she didn’t have before, it’s much easier. “You use your muscles for everything. You don’t notice until they start getting weaker, and if you don’t do anything about it, you start getting saggy.” Leslie also notices her increased overall strength when she’s hiking, one of her favorite outdoor activities.
“I feel very fortunate that I discovered this kind of workout that fits into my lifestyle so well, and is so beneficial. It’s easy, and the time and effort required is minimal. That’s why they call it The Perfect Workout. It is perfect.”

Rocky lost 47 pounds, three sizes, and 30 inches overall!

Strength training with personal trainer Rancho Bernardo helped Rocky, 67, lose 47 pounds and gain muscle. She explains, “I’m a whole lot stronger now, and most of my progress has been in my legs. I also had an easier time going up stairs, my knees weren’t bothering me as much, and my balance was better.”

Rocky Rockmaker admits, “I was a stress eater.” Taking care of her mom had taken its toll, and after her mom passed away she went through a rough patch for about two years. It didn’t help that she had knee and hip problems, which made even walking difficult. The extra eating and inactivity caught up with her. “I was a beach ball,” she says. A former ballet dancer, Rocky was determined to lose the weight and get back in shape, and she knew she needed to find an exercise regime to make it happen.

In October of 2013 she decided to check out The Perfect Workout’s Rancho Bernardo studio near her home. “I had never really worked with weights before,” she says. “I didn’t even realize in the beginning that the results were happening. My initial goal was to lose some weight, and a couple months in I noticed that I had. The strength increases took longer. I’m a whole lot stronger now, and most of my progress has been in my legs. I also had an easier time going up stairs, my knees weren’t bothering me as much, and my balance was better.”

Her dog, Halfrek, is thrilled with the whole process. “We go for walks now, and she’s very happy with it. The only thing she doesn’t like is that she doesn’t get as many breaks.” Rocky is taking a cue from her dog on the dieting front, too. “Halfrek has always been good at watching her diet. That’s what I’m doing now.

I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m not.” Simple advice, right? Rocky attributes her success so far to the combination of eating right and her two 20-minute workouts each week. After losing 47 pounds, she says, “I have a waist again! I look fine, though not as good as I’d like. I’m not at my ‘fighting weight’ yet. I’d like to lose another 20 pounds.”

This former self-described “beach ball” has transformed into a svelte new woman, happy about life and the way she looks. Recently she had to show her driver’s license on a trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was one of her old “fat” pictures, and the woman looking at her license couldn’t believe the change. She said, “Wow, you’ve lost a lot of weight” and brought everyone over to look at it. “It was a real boost, very uplifting,” says Rocky. “The Perfect Workout has made a huge difference.”

Don Dropped 37 Pounds!

Don Reed is a common sense guy who knows what he wants and goes after it. He doesn’t have a lot of spare time, and at age 53, “didn’t want to go to a gym with a bunch of young muscle heads.” Like a lot of men his age, he also had a few pounds to lose, and higher than average cholesterol and blood pressure. So when he and his wife, Becky, came to The Perfect Workout’s Rancho Bernardo studio last May, they both signed up with personal trainer Rancho Bernardo without any hesitation.

While most people who are trying to lose weight get on the scale daily or at least weekly, Don took a different approach. “I went in with a phased-goal approach, a three-month and a six-month goal,” he says. “But we ended up signing up for six months, so I purposely didn’t weigh myself for the first six months.” He was pleasantly surprised when he finally checked after six months: 37 pounds down. While Becky was getting a lot of definition, Don was losing weight and getting stronger at the same time, a good combination. He went from doing 15-pound dumbbell curls to 60 pounds on the bicep curl machine, increased his chest press from 65 to 95 pounds, and went from 210 to 385 pounds on the leg press.

What’s even more impressive is that he did all of that in spite of a bad elbow. As a child, Don had shattered and dislocated his elbow, and had five surgeries to repair the damage. The pain level was high, but he learned to live with it. Working closely with his trainer, Don was able to strengthen the tendons and muscles around the elbow joint, and within six weeks of starting slow-motion strength training, he noticed a difference. He hasn’t taken any pain medication for his elbow since, “a side effect I wasn’t expecting,” he says.

Don attributes his success to three factors. First, of course, is The Perfect Workout’s unique method of slow-motion strength training. The key to this exercise is performing the lifting phase of each weightlifting repetition in approximately 10 seconds, and the lowering phase in 10 seconds as well. Enough resistance is used so that deep muscular fatigue is achieved within just one to two minutes on each exercise. Don says, “It’s worked for me because it’s only two days a week for 20 minutes. I travel a lot and it’s flexible. I’ve been able to not miss sessions.” Another factor is the one-on-one training. “They know how to increase the weight, and exactly how to position each exercise correctly. Katie and Donna are very energetic and constantly encouraging. And they’re always sneaking in extra weight!” The other big reason for Don’s weight loss? A simple change in diet. He quit drinking six cans of Coke or Mountain Dew a day and started drinking more water and sweetened tea. Don says, “That’s it. Everything else is due to The Perfect Workout.”

Now that they’ve seen great results, Don and Becky are excited to continue. They just signed up for six more months, and Don’s new goal is to lose 50 more pounds. Compared to working out at a regular gym, he says, “The Perfect Workout is the best return on investment for the time involved.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
